What Module 2 routing means—and what it does not mean.
The Digital SAT adapts between modules, not after every individual question. Module 1 performance changes the difficulty mix in Module 2, while the final section score uses the response pattern across both modules. The exact College Board scoring model and live item parameters are proprietary.
Module 1 determines the Module 2 mix
Every student begins with a module containing easy, medium, and hard questions. After that module ends, performance routes the student to a second module with a higher- or lower-difficulty mix. The second module is not uniformly hard or easy; both routes remain mixed.
The route is not a simple bonus or penalty
Seeing the higher-difficulty route does not automatically add points, and seeing the lower route does not automatically subtract them. College Board states that score ranges overlap and students can meet benchmarks through either route. Performance across both modules matters.
Item characteristics matter
College Board uses Item Response Theory. The model considers characteristics of the questions answered correctly or incorrectly, including difficulty, and the probability that a response pattern reflects guessing. Two students with the same number correct can therefore receive different section scores.
Pretest questions do not count
Each module contains two pretest questions used to evaluate possible future items. Students cannot identify them during the test, so every question should receive a serious attempt. Pretest responses do not affect the score.
Why independent practice scores are estimates
A third-party platform does not have College Board’s live item parameters or equating process. SATpace can use realistic structure, response patterns, authored difficulty, and its own empirical calibration to estimate a range, but it should never label that result an official SAT score.

Can two students get the same number correct and different scores?+
Yes. Item characteristics and the overall response pattern contribute to the score, so equal raw totals can produce different section scores.
Do students know which SAT questions are unscored?+
No. Each module includes two unidentified pretest questions, and they do not affect the score.
