Digital SAT format guide
The Digital SAT format, from first question to final module.
The current SAT lasts 2 hours 14 minutes and contains 98 questions across Reading and Writing and Math. Each section has two separately timed modules. This guide explains the structure students should rehearse now—not the retired three-hour paper format.
Digital SAT timing at a glance
Reading and Writing comes first: two 32-minute modules with 27 questions each. After a 10-minute break, Math has two 35-minute modules with 22 questions each. You can move among questions only inside the current module; once a module ends, it cannot be reopened.
- Reading and Writing: 64 minutes, 54 questions
- Break: 10 minutes
- Math: 70 minutes, 44 questions
- Total testing time: 134 minutes
How the two-module structure works
Module 1 contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Performance in that module determines whether Module 2 contains a higher- or lower-difficulty mix. Both routes still contain questions at multiple difficulty levels, and the section score uses work from both modules.
Reading and Writing is short-passage work
The current section uses passages or passage pairs of roughly 25 to 150 words, generally followed by one question. It tests Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Similar skills are grouped and progress from easier to harder within a module.
Math allows a calculator throughout
Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. A calculator is allowed for the entire section, including the graphing calculator built into Bluebook. Some questions are multiple choice and others require a student-produced response.
What to rehearse besides content
A realistic practice test should train module pacing, flagging and review, answer elimination, annotation, calculator judgment, and the transition into the scheduled break. Content knowledge matters, but a full simulation also reveals when attention, timing, or tool use breaks down.
