Digital SAT grammar guide
The SAT grammar rules repeat. Learn the decision behind each one.
Grammar questions become faster when you stop choosing what merely sounds natural and identify the construction being tested. The current Digital SAT concentrates these decisions in Standard English Conventions and Expression of Ideas, using short passages and stable question stems.
Sentence boundaries come first
Before judging punctuation, identify independent clauses. A period and semicolon can separate two complete sentences. A comma alone cannot. A colon requires a complete clause before it and introduces an explanation, list, or elaboration after it.
- Independent clause + period + independent clause
- Independent clause + semicolon + independent clause
- Independent clause + comma + coordinating conjunction + independent clause
- Complete clause + colon + explanation or list
- No punctuation when the sentence structure does not permit a break
Subject–verb and pronoun agreement
Ignore interrupting phrases and locate the grammatical subject. The verb agrees with that subject, not with the nearest noun. Pronouns must have a clear antecedent and agree in number; possessive pronouns never use apostrophes.
Verb form, tense, and finiteness
A complete clause normally needs a finite verb. Participles and infinitives cannot always carry the clause alone. Use timeline clues to choose tense and aspect, and keep shifts only when the meaning requires them.
Modifiers must point cleanly
An opening descriptive phrase should sit next to the noun it modifies. If the sentence begins with a modifier but the next noun cannot logically perform the action, the construction is dangling. Placement also controls whether a modifier limits the intended word or phrase.
Transitions express logic, not mood
Name the relationship before reading the choices: continuation, example, cause, result, concession, contrast, or sequence. A transition can be grammatically acceptable and still be logically wrong.
Rhetorical synthesis follows the goal
Student-notes questions do not reward using the greatest number of facts. Identify the stated writing goal, keep only the notes that accomplish it, and avoid adding a comparison, conclusion, or emphasis the notes do not support.

What grammar is tested on the Digital SAT?+
The main categories are Boundaries and Form, Structure, and Sense, including punctuation, clause structure, agreement, verbs, modifiers, possessives, and plurals.
Is the Oxford comma always required on the SAT?+
The SAT tests whether punctuation fits the sentence structure and meaning. Focus on the grammatical boundary rather than memorizing a blanket preference.
How do I improve SAT transition questions?+
State the logical relationship between the surrounding ideas before looking at the options, then choose the transition that expresses that relationship precisely.
Should I choose the answer that sounds best?+
No. Sound can help, but the reliable method is to identify clauses, agreement, modifier targets, or the rhetorical goal and apply the relevant rule.
